FIRST+II Program Celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Advancing Disability-Inclusive Finance in Ghana

Today, the FIRST+II Program proudly joins the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD) and the global community to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities under the theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.” This day reminds us that disability inclusion is not an act of charity; it is a right, a pathway to dignity, resilience, and opportunity.

Ghana continues to make bold strides toward disability-inclusive finance, and we are proud to be part of this momentum. Together with our partners, we are working to ensure that persons with disabilities have equitable access to financial services as well as the knowledge and capability to make informed financial decisions.

Through the FIRST+II Program, GFD has already trained 2,538 persons with disabilities, with a goal of reaching 6,200 individuals across the Eastern, Western, Central, and Greater Accra Regions. These financial capability trainings are equipping participants with the confidence, tools, and skills to improve their financial independence and participation in economic activities.

The FIRST+II Program has also supported 135 financial institutions to advance disability-inclusive financial services through a joint Ghana Microfinance Network (GHAMFIN)–GFD initiative. This support has helped financial institutions to:

• Strengthen internal systems and inclusive practices

• Expand financial services to underserved persons with disabilities

• Align with the Bank of Ghana’s Financial Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities Directive.

Looking ahead, a new collaboration between CDC Consult and GFD, supported by the FIRST+II program, is under development and will support 21 partner financial institutions. This initiative will introduce practical tools, create disability-inclusive action plans, strengthen institutional systems, and monitor progress for long-term impact.

Together, we are paving the way for a financial sector that leaves no one behind and where persons with disabilities are not only customers, but innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders in economic transformation.

Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

We remain committed to advancing inclusive finance in Ghana.
